Billing

A schedule fee, a bulk-billing incentive and a patient gap are three different amounts. This page does not calculate a gap.

Bulk-billing incentives

MBS Online’s November 2025 news, page last updated 29 October 2025, says that from 1 November 2025 bulk-billing incentive items are amended so the patient does not have to be under 16 or hold a Commonwealth concession card. Any Medicare-eligible patient who is bulk billed can be the patient for the incentive. The factsheet, page last updated 3 September 2025, names the Group M1 items and said the change was subject to the passage of legislation. The later news page states the change as happening on 1 November 2025.

MBS item fees

An item fee is the schedule fee on MBS Online for that item and that schedule date. Item 30720 on this site is the 1 July 2026 schedule fee for an appendicectomy. It is one item, not a fee list.

Gap fees

A gap is the difference between what is charged and what Medicare, and a fund if there is one, pay. The schedule fee is not that charge. This page does not put a dollar on a gap, because the charge is not in the schedule.

What doctors often miss

A bulk-billing incentive and a schedule fee are published items. A gap is whatever is charged above what Medicare and a fund pay. This page does not price the gap.
