What to watch

Dates for tax, super and housing, plus a few standing topics. Each item links to the official page.

Upcoming and in force

  • 1 Jul 2026 · In force

    Super paid with each payday

From 1 July 2026 employers pay compulsory super with wages, not in a quarterly lump. The 12% itself did not change. The timing did.

The hospital page still shows super for the whole year, not each payslip.

  • FY2026–27 · In force

Extra tax if super is over $3 million

Part of the year’s earnings linked to super above $3 million is taxed again. Above $10 million, a bit more. The tax office assesses this later. This site does not.

There is a calculator for the idea. It is not your assessment.

  • FY2026–27 · In force

    Before-tax super limit is $32,500

That is the most that can go into super before tax this year, including what your employer already pays.

The pages for spare cash, super, and the offset already use this limit.

  • 1 Jul 2026 · In force

General transfer balance cap: $2.1 million

The general transfer balance cap rose to $2.1 million. Your personal transfer balance cap can be different. Check it in your tax-office online account.

There isn’t a control here for your personal cap.

  • 1 Oct 2026 · Starts

New rule when a foreign resident sells property

From 1 October 2026 a tighter tax applies when someone who is not an Australian resident sells certain property here. Sales that already settled are not rewritten.

The house-cost and rent pages still use today’s rules until that date.

  • 1 Apr 2027 · Recurring

    Next salary-packaging year

Hospital packaging runs 1 April to 31 March, not the July-to-June tax year.

The hospital page uses this year’s caps. Check the tax office if a cap changes.

  • 1 Jul 2027 watch · Announced

Possible change to tax on gains, from July 2027

Announced in a budget. It is not the law yet. This tax year still uses today’s rules, including taxing only half the gain if you held the asset more than a year.

The house and rent pages keep today’s discount until a start date is actually law.

  • Watch · Announced

    Talk of limiting rental deductions

If a limit ever starts, it would change what you can claim on a rental. Right now, interest is still deductible.

The house-cost page still treats interest the way the law does today.

  • Locum / ABN · Recurring

Locum invoices are often still your own income

Sending an invoice does not automatically make the money business income. If it is mainly pay for your own work, extra rules can apply. The test is on the tax-office page.

The tax calculator does not decide this for you.

    ATO ↗
  • Private lists · Recurring

    GST registration

Whether you must register for GST depends on turnover. It is not a switch on the hospital-versus-locum calculator.

The income-tax page does not work out GST.

    ATO ↗
  • HELP debt · Recurring

    HELP debt repayment

What you repay depends on income, and salary packaging can push that income up. The rates are on Study Assist.

Turn it on in the tax and award calculators. Unless you add packaged amounts, taxable income is used as a stand-in.

    Study Assist ↗
  • Public hospital · Recurring

    Salary packaging

Public hospitals can package a capped amount without the usual tax on those benefits. The packaged amount can still increase a HELP debt repayment even while it cuts income tax.

The hospital page shows the usual caps. It does not tell you how much to package.

  • Registration · Recurring

    Professional indemnity

AhprA registration needs professional indemnity insurance that meets the standard. We do not quote or sell cover.

The income-by-specialty table shows a rough band, not a policy.

    Ahpra ↗
  • Super · Recurring

Who gets your super if you die

Super usually follows the form you gave the fund, not your will.

The wills page has a checklist and links to the official form. It does not fill it in.

    ATO ↗
  • Practice · Recurring

Payroll tax if you run rooms

This is a state tax, not a tax-office tax. State rules differ and have changed; check your state.

The payroll-tax page links every state revenue office. We don’t calculate payroll tax.

  • Family · Recurring

    Aged-care fees

Home-care and residential fees are a means test. My Aged Care is the front door.

It’s on the wills checklist. This is Australian aged care, not an insurance product.

    My Aged Care ↗
  • Super · Recurring

The taxed and tax-free parts of super

A super death payment to an adult child is often taxed on the taxable part. The tax-free part is not. Moving money out and back in to change that split is a conversation with a tax agent, not a step this site tells you to take.

Explained on the wills page. There is no list that says to do this before 30 June.

    ATO ↗
  • Cover · Recurring

Income cover, and disability cover inside super

Cover that pays if you cannot do your own job usually comes out of your cash. Disability cover inside super usually pays only if you cannot do any suitable work, and the premium comes out of super.

The income-cover page compares the two. It does not name insurers, and a higher premium there is an assumption, not a quote.

  • Preservation age · In force

Using super while you are still working

If you were born on or after 1 July 1964, you can first access super at 60. You can start a pension then while still working, capped at 10% of the balance a year. It is not money you can spend at 55.

The ages are on the page about when you can use your super. Taking money out over time is a separate page.
