Things worth knowing as a private specialist.

General information only. This page does not save what you open.

Now

  • Tax and the set-aside

Private and locum income usually has nothing withheld. The tax page splits that from the hospital wage.

  • ABN, GST and personal services income

Private billing, locum contracts and VMO work can bring ABN, GST and personal services income rules that a hospital salary doesn’t. The page sets out what the ATO and the Australian Business Register say. It does not decide a contract.

  • Super caps, Division 293, Division 296

Personal concessional contributions are claimed as a deduction. The caps and the two extra taxes are separate.

  • Rooms

A room to rent or buy is a listing, not a yield. The holding-cost sketch is separate.

Soon

  • MBS

A fee is the published schedule fee, not what a fund pays, and not a quote.

  • Debt recycling

Interest on a home is not deductible. Interest on money borrowed to invest might be. The page does not tell you to redraw.

  • Investing outside super

A mix of indexes, with fees, over a chosen number of years. Not a portfolio.

Often missed

  • Inheritance checklist

Super does not follow the will unless the fund form says so.

  • Capital gains

Law since 26 June 2026 (Tax Reform No. 1 Act 2026). From 1 July 2027, negative gearing of residential property is limited to new builds. Properties held at 7:30pm AEST on 12 May 2026 are exempt from the negative gearing change. From 1 July 2027 the 50% CGT discount is replaced by cost base indexation and a 30% minimum tax rate, for gains that accrue after that date. • Indemnity premium

A quote is between you and the insurer. This site does not price a policy.
